"He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them." 2 Corinthians 5:15
The world is a crazy place right now. It seems to be getting crazier by the minute. Children are being murdered before they have a chance at life. Other children who survive and live are being exploited in unthinkable ways. 25,ooo people die each day from starvation. But while these horrors are happening every minute, every second of our days, we are consumed with getting more, better, and the newest. We spend the majority of our time on ourselves. The most glaring example I can think of is when a new technology comes out, people wait for hours, even days in long lines to get the latest super phone, or new video game, or best deal on a tv.
We are a society consumed with self. But this scripture tells us that instead of living for ourselves, we are supposed to be living for Christ. But isn't the American way all about building ourselves up, doing the most for our family, getting the best job, house, and bank account that we can? Yes, we are given a family to care for and provide for, but how much is enough? What if we pray Psalm 119:36, asking God to make us into selfless creatures who care more for others than we do for ourselves? " Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain,"
What would our world look like?
Are every one of us called to sell all of our possessions and move to the inner city or a third world country and serve the poor? Are all of us called to adopt children who desperately need a family whether here from the US, or from across the ocean? Are all of us called to preach in prisons? to be a voice for the homeless? to fight for the unborn or the trafficked?
No. We are not all called to all things. But we are all called to something. What is your passion? What makes you cry? What tears your heart out, making you wish you could change things if only... If only what? you had more money? more time? more experience? More, more, more, more...
Now is the time. Do something. Be selfless for someone. Give of yourself not because it earns you points but because it fills your soul. If we can step out of our self, even briefly, we grow more into who God wants us to be. Take the first step. Do something.
Don't listen to those excuses or allow them to keep you comfortable. I'm not judging, I am urging.
DO SOMETHING.
